{"id":162,"date":"2013-12-17T17:09:45","date_gmt":"2013-12-17T17:09:45","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/jugu.org\/gblog\/?p=162"},"modified":"2013-12-17T17:09:45","modified_gmt":"2013-12-17T17:09:45","slug":"reflections-on-castells-and-kellner","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/jugu.org\/gblog\/2013\/12\/17\/reflections-on-castells-and-kellner\/","title":{"rendered":"Reflections on Castells and Kellner"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Both these paper are dated &#8211; Castells\u00a0 from 1999, Kellner from 2002.\u00a0 They both take a broad philosophical sweep over the changing world as a result of IT and network technologies.<\/p>\n<p>Castells focuses on networks &#8211; power being in the network, isolation if out of the network.\u00a0 He identifies the opportunity for slower adopters to leapfrog the early stages and go straight to fully networked access. He identifies the transformation of relationship between capital and labour when labour is remote and invisible in an information society.\u00a0 He identifies cost lowering as the thin end of the wedge for poorer countries in a globalised world.\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 However, he lapses into idealism &#8220;The \u00a0disassociation between economic growth\u00a0 and social development in the \u00a0information age is not only morally wrong, but also impossible to sustain.&#8221;\u00a0 &#8220;It will take a dramatic investment in overhauling\u00a0 the \u00a0educational system everywhere, through co-operation between national and local \u00a0governments, international institutions and lending agencies, international and \u00a0local business, and families.&#8221;\u00a0 I wonder if he really expected that to happen?<\/p>\n<p>Kellner is even more idealistic.\u00a0 He focuses on the need to gain new literacies rather than on the acquisition of IT and networks.\u00a0 However his conclusions are simplstic and impractical.\u00a0 &#8221;\u00a0The disconnect and divides can be overcome, however, by more actively and collaboratively bringing students into interactive classrooms or learning situations in which they are able to transmit their skills and knowledges to fellow students and teachers alike.&#8221;\u00a0 &#8221;\u00a0In much of the world, the struggle for daily existence is paramount and meeting unmet human and social needs is a high priority. Yet everywhere education can provide the competencies and skills to improve one&#8217;s life, to create a better society, and a more civilized and developed world.&#8221;\u00a0 &#8220;The time is ripe to take up the challenge and to move to reconstruct education and society so that groups and individuals excluded from the benefits of the economy, culture, and society\u00a0 may\u00a0 more\u00a0 fully\u00a0 participate\u00a0 and\u00a0 receive\u00a0 opportunities\u00a0 not\u00a0 possible\u00a0 in\u00a0 earlier\u00a0 social constellations &#8220;.\u00a0 Again one wonder if he is really serious regarding this as a possibility&gt;<\/p>\n<p>Both papers are comprehensive and analytically sound.\u00a0 However their conclusions either reflect the misplaced optimism of the dawn of networked society or are just academically tidy ways to end their papers!<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Both these paper are dated &#8211; Castells\u00a0 from 1999, Kellner from 2002.\u00a0 They both take a broad philosophical sweep over the changing world as a result of IT and network technologies.
